Because Benedict Cumberbatch.

Because Benedict Cumberbatch could do with some public relations and words make me happy.

“I couldn’t see Martin’s face. He was just a little blob on the pavement waiting for a bigger blob to land by his feet. That was really wonderful to see what he had done on the other end of that phone conversation. I could hear, we were wired so we could hear each other speak in real time. So I could hear him but to see it was really really moving and seeing him in shock afterwards…it’s ridiculous but it actually made me cry.” — Benedict Cumberbatch on the ending of The Reichenbach Fall.

Benedict speaks as though Sherlock is a real person, I say.  “He’s real to me, yeah of course, it has to be. He is an icon, so there’s an element of him where he is a logo, and that is two-dimensional, and to escape stereotype you have to get some kind of understanding of who he is. So you do associate something very personable to him, and you start to think about him in real terms.” (x)

“I was trying to make a comparison between Watson being Kirk and Sherlock being Spock, and it sort of fell apart. They’re both great double acts, they both need each other, they balance each other out: the impetuous, impulsive and emotionally-driven nature of Kirk, and the logical, calculating, cool calmness and politeness of Spock. With Watson and Sherlock, it kind of bleeds around a little bit. Watson wants danger, like Kirk does; he likes being impulsive and having action. But he also grounds Sherlock: he gives him a reasonable amount of empathy and an understanding that he is part of the world around him, not separate from it. Sherlock gives Watson a key to a world of adventure and excitement that he wouldn’t have if he was a retired army doctor. So … Spock and Sherlock. Zach [Zachary Quinto] and I talked about this, but Spock’s very polite. Sherlock is incredibly rude and makes no bones about it, especially if it’s to do with mediocrity or somebody he feels is in any way wasting his time. Spock’s concise, but he’s not impatient, so I think the comparisons kind of wane off. But they’re both great double acts, they’re both great partnerships, male partnerships.”

God, he’s so small, compared to how he is in the movie (Into Darkness)—he’s so epic. He is an utter chameleon who I think can do anything. He’s one of the best actors I’ve ever seen, let alone worked with. He was able to bring all of these incredible nuances and attitude to a role that in lesser hands would not have worked remotely that well. - J.J Abrams (x)

“How about that Benedict Cumberbatch, eh? Right? You only need to say his name in England and people loose their minds! So, it’s thrilling, because you know, in addition to being so enormously talented, Ben is such an incredible guy and his feet are always on the ground, he’s got a great sense of humour, he’s incredibly generous and just mind blowing. His character is spectacular. So I’m so happy for all the success that’s coming his way, he deserves every bit of it!” Zachary Quinto talking about Benedict Cumberbatch at the Star Trek Into Darkness London Premiere (X) Video from

“I wanted Harrison’s voice to have something slightly manufactured and odd, that sounded test-tube-made, where every word was sort of etched. I was keen to make his violence quick—not balletic, but purposeful. And his physique—he’s not Bane, he’s not this unsurpassable physical entity. He’s a warrior, a spearhead—someone who just carves his way through and doesn’t stop. There had to be emotion in the movement as well, and when he was at rest, it was more reptilian.”
